So finally I have started running again. There has been a lot of procrastinating in this resumption, which has generally characterised by lots of not wanting to get out of bed. I concept of exercising first thing has not been one I have cherished. However, in theory, that is behind me now. I won't lie and say I am leaping out of bed with exercise in my heart just yet, but I guess if I can get up just after 6am on a Saturday I am doing ok. Starting running is always crap. Let's face it, it's pretty hard to make pleasant the feeling that you just want to stop, you can't go any further, your legs can't carry on and your stomach is ready to hurl. So this time, I have decided to use the Zombies Run 5km App. This App builds on the great Zombies Run App. It has a structured programme built around the Zombie Apocalypse theme, where you are being trained up as a runner who will go out and get supplies. You are the new Runner 5.
The training programme starts very basic and is designed for someone who is completely unfit I think. It's first stages are a 10 min walk, then 10 drills of 1 min walking, 15 secs running. This is followed by a 10 min free run where you can walk or run as much as you like. Considering I can already run around 1.5kms with little difficulty this is a little basic for me, I have decided to follow the programme in its entirety and see how it goes.
So while I have not done a huge amount of running this week, I have covered around 5km in each session and that is 5kms I would not have covered otherwise. 5kms of moving and not sitting still is not too bad in my books. Also, I must remember, I am not the overweight or anything, I am just trying to stay fit and ensure I do not get overweight. This is about the long game, not particularly short term wins.
